Persolv is an online educational company that offers remote machine learning and artificial intelligence courses for students.
The original website aimed to be simple and informational. The business has since expanded, and the product needs an appropriate redesign.
If we design with future-proofing in mind, then additional features can be easily added, and with a more approachable design aesthetic we can increase the capture of parents and students.
After analyzing the pages of competitors I came to the following conclusions:
1. The landing page is the most important page to both lead users deeper into the site and keep users interested and informed.
2. Clear and organized navigation bars are crucial to lead users to their desired pages.
3. The key pages of the site can be broken down as follows:
A. Landing page
B. Informational pages
C. Application pages
D. Contact page
Elite Prep
Kumon
DesignLab
General Assembly

After getting an understanding of what elements and pages competitors prioritized when designing their website. I started to conduct user interviews from my personal network that fulfilled either of the following requirements:
1. Is interested in artificial intelligence and Machine Learning.
OR
2. Is interested in enhancing or continuing their education.

Considering the hefty cost for a bootcamp aimed at a highschool demographic, the value proposition must be clear.
Artificial intelligence and machine learning are hot subjects, so there’s a great interest surrounding this industry and space.

The Persolv User Flow
Using the empathy map as a guide, I was able to map out the necessary pages in order to make a clear user flow. Ultimately the user flow had to be broken down into two paths. The first path would be focused on developing trust and conversions, while the other would focus on the accepted applications and payment funnel.

According to the data from user interviews, I found that users found it difficult to identify the interactable elements on the About Us page.
Originally these interactable staff cards were designed to impart legitimacy in the team, however users instead found legitimacy through the overall quality of the site.
After discussing with stakeholders and engineers, this feature was deemed unnecessary and better removed in the final product.

To establish a coherent and effective design system for PersolvAI, I realized that a major challenge would be blending both the sophistication and approachability required on educational platforms. After some experimentation, I concluded that a combination of intuitive navigation and accessible design elements, adhering to educational standards yet simplified for user ease, would most effectively serve user needs.

While working with the stakeholders, we came across many decisions that we had to discuss and work through. The discussions naturally resulted in compromise. I used to think of compromise as meeting in the middle, but through this project I realized that compromise is a much more lengthy, but rewarding process.
A good compromise has no losers.
When designing, I had to focus heavily on the delicate balance of catering to an audience of prospective students and their parents. I found that using visually appealing layouts and elements could appeal to younger demographics, while ensuring clarity and depth in content and copy could instill confidence in parents about the educational value of the courses.
Different strengths can engage different audiences.
While redesigning, it became imperative that the product established credibility in a field as challenging as artificial intelligence. I expected that this could be established through the pedigree of the staff, however during the process I realized that it wasn’t so one-dimensional. Consistent tone in all elements, from web interface to copy, embeds a sense of reliability and authority in a brand.
Tonality is conveyed in totality.
At a distance, scale can be deceiving. I initially expected this project to be simple in nature, and I wanted the focus to primarily be on interactions. Through the duration of the project, its scale quickly grew as I realized the necessary components to make a minimum viable project that met user expectations on a new twist.
A good compromise has no losers.
It became imperative that Persolv product established credibility, especially in a field as challenging as artificial intelligence. I learned that keeping a holistic and consistent tone in all elements, from web interface to copy, embeds a sense of reliability and authority in a brand.
